About the film
Shura Azarova would rather ride and fence than dance at balls. When Napoleon invades Russia, she puts on a uniform and joins the hussars as 'cornet Azarov', fighting alongside Lieutenant Rzhevsky, the man she was supposed to marry.
Ryazanov made this colourful musical comedy for the 150th anniversary of the war of 1812. It is full of songs, duels and comic misunderstandings.
The story was inspired by the real Nadezhda Durova, who served in the Russian cavalry disguised as a man.
