About Soviet Classics

Soviet Classics is an independent English-language guide to the films of Mosfilm, the largest film studio of the Soviet Union. We pick films that have English subtitles, explain what they are about and why they matter, and let you watch them right here.

Where do the films come from?

We do not host any video. Every film plays through YouTube's standard embedded player from Mosfilm's official YouTube channel, where the studio publishes its restored films for free. Mosfilm controls those videos and earns from the ads shown inside the player.

Why are some famous films missing?

We only list films that are on the official channel and can be embedded on other sites, and almost all of them have English subtitles. A few holiday essentials, such as The Irony of Fate, are listed even though Mosfilm has not subtitled them yet; they are clearly marked RU only. When more films get subtitles, we add them.
